Another dither holding me up

Finally back to work and stuck again!

If I tell you this is my inspiration photo please don't think I have any hope of replicating it - it is just the 'notion' of the room I would like to capture.  Calm, green fairly empty and a lot of paintings.

I have sage green wallpaper for the music room - I want a plain colour as I will have a lot of pictures in here and a ton of OTT furniture.

Then I decided I might as well play around with the rather nice border that is on the edge of the paper.  ???

paper with its border

I could have some of the border visible below the dental trim I bought especially for this room, but I don't think the angular cuts of the trim go with the curvy pattern in the border (the trim needs painting of course) ????

OR could have some of the border visible but with a mini coving just to tidy the join between the ceiling and wall ????  Now I am not sure if I am comfy with the coving and ceiling being very white and the border being slightly greyish.

Or back to plan A and plain green walls and plain white small dental trim coving.  This is what happens when you buy plain wallpaper and it comes with a surprise trim!

Opinions very welcome

  1. Hi Marilyn! I think that the border is Grand and I would agree with you that the dentil trim is too angular for the sensuous curves of the paper pattern. I do like the cove moulding and if it is too stark, could you not paint it a warmer white to lessen the contrast between it and the color of the border?

    1. Thanks Elizabeth for 'voting'. There are times in this solitary mini game when you need to hear another voice to stop you going round in circles. Marilyn

    1. Hi Irene, I bet you do - and how naughty of me not to credit it - your second home.... Gladstone's Land. I loved that building, truly a one off. The calm of that 'public' room was lovely and that's what I wanted to 'capture'. Marilyn (second picture again!)

    2. What a chump I am. Thank you for the gentle reminder that this is the drawing room of the Georgian House and not Gladstone's Land at all!! That said I loved both places for different reasons. I was lucky enough to do a tour of The Georgian House before the public came in and I was allowed to take as many photos as I liked so i really got to see the detail of the place and feel that for at least an hour it was actually mine! 3. Personally, I prefer the mini coving. I'm not sure the coving needs to be a different colour...the green of the paper or maybe the grey? I always think white looks so elegant :0)

    1. Hi Pepper, Rock and a hard place with coving colour - it joins the border and the ceiling - ceiling is white and would match coving which seems to me to be the way to go - generally don't like contrasting coving - think it is odd, always think of it as a bit of the ceiling that drops down on to the walls. It just seemed a bit odd against this not quite white trim. Seems mini coving wins hands down! Marilyn

  4. Hello, you don't know me because I rarely comment on blogs but Pepper knows who I am if it makes you feel uncomfortable. I have a compromise suggestion for your molding dilemma: Try cutting the top shell border off of the paper (play with a photocopy first) and applying it in the cove. That might make the two elements work together more smoothly.

The room will be lovely, no matter which method you choose. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Hello Marilyn,
I love the border and would use the mini coving. It makes the detail in the boarder stand out and the combination looks very elegant. I also love the contrast between the white coving and ceiling with the greyish border.

    1. Yeah, my absolute Prince of Style and Design has taken time to 'vote'. Many thanks Giac, looks like the mini coving and white paint is a goer. Phew, no more fretting. Honestly, you'd think this stuff was important! Marilyn

  6. Someone who emailed rather than commented here suggested adding a small trim beneath the border like in the original photo - so - I am soon off to the York Show and I will pick up fine half round trim if I can find one and do just that. White mini coving, some of the border and small white trim beneath. Thank you all. M
